If you’ve been prescribed Advair Diskus, you probably want to know the easiest way to use it correctly. This medication helps control asthma and COPD symptoms by delivering medicine directly to your lungs, but it only works when taken properly.
First off, make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling the inhaler. Open the Diskus by holding it level and sliding the thumb grip away until you hear a click—this means it's ready. Don’t shake it like a spray bottle; Advair Diskus works differently.
Next, hold the Diskus with the mouthpiece towards you and breathe out fully to empty your lungs before inhaling the medication. Don’t breathe into the mouthpiece. Then, put the mouthpiece between your lips and breathe in deeply and steadily through your mouth to draw the medicine in.
After inhaling, remove the Diskus from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds or as long as comfortable. This step helps the medication settle deep in your lungs where it can do its job. Then, breathe out slowly.
Remember to use your Advair Diskus exactly as your doctor directed—usually twice a day. Don’t use it more or less often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the next one; don’t double up. Keep track of your doses—each Diskus has a counter that shows how many doses remain.
Also, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use. This little step can prevent mouth infections and irritation, common side effects with Advair. Store your Diskus at room temperature away from moisture and heat to keep it working well.
If you’re unsure or have trouble using it, ask your healthcare provider for a demonstration. Getting comfortable with your inhaler technique can make a big difference in controlling your symptoms and feeling better.
